Biography

Pianist Paavali Jumppanen "performs with immense power and drive, and commands an extraordinary range of colors,” writes The New York Times.
“The piano sings beautifully, but with a voice that is big and full of
expressive possibilities.” Jumppanen has presented solo recitals at New
York’s Carnegie Hall and Washington’s Kennedy Center, and has toured
Australia with the Melbourne Symphony to critical acclaim. Born in
Finland, Jumppanen won first prize in the country’s national Maj Lind
Competition in Helsinki at age nineteen, and has played with every
orchestra in Finland. He has served as Artistic Director of Finland’s
Lemi-Lappeenranta Music Festival since 2004 . A strong proponent of new
music, Jumppanen has recorded the complete piano sonatas of Pierre Boulez, on a Deutsche Grammophon disc produced in 2005 with the composer in honor of his 80th birthday. The UK newspaper The Guardian called the five-star recording “ the finest and best-recorded disc of Boulez’s piano music so far.”
