Biography

Reinier van Houdt’s music displays a fascination with matters that escape notation: sound, timing, space, physicality, memory, noise, environment - points where interpretation touches improvisation. His unusual repertoire results from personal quests, collaborations with composers & musicians, from research in archives, from the 'composing' and 'staging' of music-performances, or from unorthodox studies of the classics. He has premiered music by Robert Ashley, Alvin Curran, Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, Francisco López, Charlemagne Palestine, Yannis Kyriakides, Maria de Alvear, Jerry Hunt, Michael Pisaro, John Oswald. He has also worked with John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Luc Ferrari, Olivier Messiaen; with theatre companies like Hotel Modern, Andcompany & Co, Veenfabriek, Leine & Roebana and ZOOGDIER, a music theatre group of which he is co-founder. Reinier van Houdt also plays in Current 93 and is one of the moving forces behind the experimental music outfit MAE/MAZE. He has performed in such diverse venues as the Knitting Factory in New York, San Ildefonso in Mexico City, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, DOM in Moscow, Setagaya Gallery in Tokyo, the New Library in Alexandria Egypt, Mills College in Oakland, HAU in Berlin and Kunstraum in Düsseldorf.
